An End-of Summer Tradition in Chelsea

Every fall, as the air in Chelsea begins to shift and the neighborhood settles into a new season, the residents of London Terrace come together for a tradition that has quietly become one of the community’s most beloved events: the London Terrace Street Fair.

On October 3, 2026, the fair celebrates its 32nd year—a testament to the enduring spirit of a community built on connection, creativity, and shared history. Founded by Jocelyne Tord, Geno Sartori, Elizabeth Hartman, Edrie Cote, and other LTTA board members, the fair began simply: neighbors setting up tables, clearing out closets, and meeting one another face-to-face. What started as a modest “clean out your closet” gathering quickly evolved into something much more meaningful.

Over the decades, the Street Fair has grown in size and reputation, while holding tightly to its original character. Unlike the larger, commercialized street fairs that line avenues across New York City, the London Terrace Street Fair has intentionally preserved its vintage flea market atmosphere. Here, you’ll find personal collections, handmade goods, unexpected treasures, and stories behind every table—each one reflecting the individuality of the residents who make up this unique community.

Traditionally held at the start of fall, it marks a seasonal turning point—a day when long-time residents, new neighbors, and returning visitors gather not just to shop, but to reconnect.

Its history also reflects the resilience of the community. The fair has only been paused a handful of times: in 2001, in the immediate aftermath of September 11; in 2020, during the first year of the COVID-19 pandemic; and in 2024, when the demands of organizing exceeded available volunteer support. Each pause underscores how much the event depends on the dedication of residents—and how meaningful its return is each time.

For many, the Street Fair is more than an event; it’s a generational tradition. Some participants who once attended as children now host their own tables, continuing a cycle of involvement that spans decades. It has become a neighborhood institution—rooted in history, sustained by volunteers, and cherished by all who take part.

At its heart, the London Terrace Street Fair remains exactly what it was intended to be: a day for neighbors to come together, share what they have, and celebrate the simple joy of community.
